Top 10 MMORPG Games 2018
10. Pillars of Eternity Definitive Edition
Pillars of Eternity or POE is a role-playing video game(RPG or MMORPG) developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Paradox Interactive. It was released for the Microsoft Windows operating system on March 26, 2015. Since it’s release it has been one of the most played games of its kind and has often being subjected to critical acclaim for its ‘visually attractive’ spells and gorgeous artworks. It has a retro vibe to it which makes it completely different from other RPGs. The game has a rating of 9/10 on Steam.
The game being an RPG is heavily dependant upon the choices of the player who arrives as a foreigner in Drywood when the game starts. The game has close ties with the supernatural and its effects on the lives of people. The player himself gets supernatural abilities from the machine invented by a cult to trap souls and must find a way to track them down in order to reverse the process. Not being able to do so would make him insane.
The game also received a two-part expansion, Pillars of Eternity: The White March(Part 1 & 2) released on August 25, 2015, and February 16, 2016, respectively.
9. Divinity Original Sin 2
Divinity: Original Sin II is an RPG game developed and published by Larian Studios. It is a direct sequel to the 2014 game Divinity Original Sin and was released for Microsoft Windows in September 2017. An enhanced version for Windows was released in August 2018.
Overall it had a huge positive response from the audience and critics. It received a perfect 10/10 score from GameSpot, becoming only the 14th game in its publication’s history to achieve that. The game, wrapped in fantasy, is set in the magical world of Rivellon, some centuries after the setting of Divinity. The plot revolves around The Godwoken who must use powers from the seven Gods of the island to bring it back to eternal rule. The game also has a multiplayer mode.
8. Tales of Berseria
Tales of Berseria was developed and published by a Japanese Company called Bandai Namco Entertainment for two PlayStations(PS3 and PS4), and Windows. It is the sixteenth installment in the Tales series and succeeded Tales of Zestiria. It was released in Japan in the month of August 2016, and later worldwide in January 2017.
As most people on this site are fans of Anime, this entry might interest them to an extent. An emotional storyline and diversification of characters uplift the experience as a whole. The game does not give much emphasis on the graphics though but combat interfaces dwindled in a world of fantasy leaves a mark on the players on this game especially the ones who are fond of this so-called Japanese pop culture.
The setting takes place in the Holy Midgand Empire before the events of the previous installment, Tales of Zestiria. The story highlights the adventures of Velvet who was one of the survivor’s of Daemonblight, a condition which makes people lose their humanity and rationalism. Some years later which saving her sick brother along with another character, Artorius, she is betrayed in a sacrifice and her arm is mutated by Daemonblight. She turns into a Daemon called Therion with the ability to absorb other Daemons around her. She becomes vengeful and the story progresses as she prepares to take on Artorius.
7. Fable 2
Hah, bamboozled by that face? Fear, rage, death and what not is waiting for you when you head over to the second installment in the Fable series, Fable 2. Coined as the best of the three games of Fable released by Lionhead Studios in the year, 2008 as a sequel of Fable, the game quickly became a fan favorite and sold 800,000 copies in its debut month despite only being released for Xbox 360. It is also one of the only few games released solely for one single console.
I would have probably included this game in my top 3 if it weren’t for its limiting in cross platforms. Though it has been ten years since its release, it stands out to be one of the very best RPGs ever made, receiving a full score from Eurogamer. One of the most consistent sequels ever made and a mind-blowing gameplay truly takes the game to another level. One finds scope for deep exploration even though he does not get lost. It’s exceptionally carved storyline is so vivid that it’s better not to say anything in here, so go ahead play it yourself and find out!
Massive multiplayer, online competitions, pub games, and a video diary added to the popularity of Fable 2. ‘Knothole Island’ and ‘See the Future’ are the two DLCs released for the game. Overall the game is truly a masterpiece.
6. Dragon Age 3: Inquisition
Looks impressive, eh? Developed and released by BioWare as a sequel to Dragon Age 2: Origins, Dragon Age 3: Inquisition or simply Dragon Age: Inquisition is everything expected from it. The game was released in November 2014 for Windows, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. The fact that it has the sixth position(above Fable 2) is because of its release in a wide range of platforms and of course, the game itself is pretty dope!
Dragon Age brings a new concept into play by letting the player choose different races of its character between humans, dwarfs and Qunari(introduced in Inquisition) which affects their general activities and abilities. The plot of the game is civil war centered and has a definitive storyline. The various downloadable content available for the game is as follows:-
- Jaws of Hakkon
- Spoils of the Avvar
- The Descent
And finally the biggest most famous of them all, Trespasser.
