The Mangekyo Sharingan, probably one of the strongest eyes ever shown in anime, has a series of extremely powerful attacks. Like, Amaterasu, Tsukuyomi, Susanoo, Izanami, Izanagi etc. While each of them is amazing in their own rights, what enthralled me more was the deep thoughts Kishimoto-san has put the names and the natures of the attacks. The connection between the names, their representation and the stories of Japanese mythology has left me spellbound. So, I want to share it with everyone.
THE POWERS OF SHARINGAN: ORIGIN OF THE NAMES
According to Japanese mythology, Amaterasu is the goddess of sun and universe(In the anime represented it as a strong fire technique).Tsukuyomi is the moon-god(In anime shown as the power to trap the enemies in gen-jutsu). Susanoo is the wild god of sea and storms(In anime represented as the huge powerful humanoid shield). They are the children of Izanagi(in the anime which is another power of Sharingan that can change destiny).
WHO ARE IZANAGI AND IZANAMI?
Izanagi and Izanami are the first pairs of gods according to Japanese myth. Izanami is the goddess of both creation and death and the wife of Izanagi. She died giving birth to the fire god kagu-tsuchi. In the anime, Izanagi was a jutsu to alter destiny. While Izanami was created to stop Izanagi by trapping the one in an infinite loop of events and making them submit to their destiny. Both Justus were shown as each other’s complement, used as a pair.
